Tree of Life w/ Birds Antique 19thC Embroidered Silk Panel 65x104

Rare and beautiful embroidered panel, dating from the 19th century (if not earlier).
Featuring a classic Tree of Life, it is embellished with almost 2 dozen uniquely worked birds. Gorgeous texture, with a fantastic variety of embroidery stitches throughout – couched, satin, stumpwork – and different threads, including metallic. We believe the techniques point to an Italian origin, though the design has an English flair. Stunning in any case.

This is absolutely striking in person, and would make an amazing wall hanging. A feast for the eyes!

The central embroidered panel measures 49 x 92 inches, and the panel as a whole measures 65 x 104. Likely the original panel was remade into a bedcover - we believe the top and bottom are later additions, and it is possible the sides were added too. We suspect this was originally a bed hanging.

Condition is very good overall. The central embroidered panel is very sturdy, and was embroidered over cotton muslin (see last photo). We note a few minor abrasions to the silk, some minor staining, a few slight splits, and some embroidery loss/loose threads. Colors are faded, compared to the back.

The outside panels of silk are not lined, are fragile, and show splits and tears (see photo 2, along the outside).

You'll forgive a few flaws on this extraordinary piece. We are totally in love.
