Four scenes from the great French Rococo painters — Boucher, Watteau, and Fragonard — interpreted through hand embroidery, lavishly worked in linen and organdy, with an elaborate honeycomb background.
Part of the Romance Series designed by Herman Klein for Imperial Linens, Madeira, this rare 1930s pattern adapts masterworks held today at the Frick, the Met, and the National Gallery of Scotland.* Two mats of each scene appear in the set, eight in all, each one a small marvel of Madeira artistry.
Excellent condition, gently used. Hand laundered, bright and clean. We note some ultra faint discolorations on the napkins, practically impossible to see. This set looks wonderful.
8 napkins, 17.5 x 18 inches.
* See The Embroidery of Madeira, Walker and Holman, 1987. These same vignettes were also used in the famous Princess Grace tablecloth, designed at the time of Grace Kelly's marriage to Prince Rainier.
