19th century opulence for your finest gathering.
Twelve magnificent monogrammed damask linen napkins. In size, quality and drama, they eclipse anything you'll find today.
The fabric is far superior: the silkiest Irish linen, light and supple in hand. At three feet wide, they reflect the extravagant table services of the mid 19th century, each embellished with an elaborate hand-embroidered triple monogram, ACR.
Even the damask pattern is a showpiece. In the scene woven across each napkin, a bird perches among tall reeds and rushes, swallows in flight around it. The detail has the delicacy of an engraving—pictorial damask at its most beautiful. We darkened the last photograph to show the weave more clearly.
The antique dealer from whom we acquired the set associated these with the Rockefeller family, though no documentary provenance accompanies them to confirm the connection. Whatever the history, these linens are as fine as one might expect from a family of great means.
Condition is excellent, we suspect they’ve never been used. Hand laundered, clean and bright, just two pinholes to one piece. A spectacular set.
