We're so in love.
Artichokes and sweet pea blossoms in unbelievably dense beauvais hand embroidery. Truly, like a painting on linen. A large motif, over five inches across, worked on a sturdy weave. These napkins are picnic perfect, and just right for the harvest table. Labeled D. Porthault. Rare and fabulous.
A photo of the back of the embroidery shows how complex this technique is, and what it takes to achieve the subtle shading and artistic precision of the front.
Condition is very good, gently used, not quite flawless. Hand laundered, clean and bright, a slight antique patina to the linen and faint shade variation from napkin to napkin. Three napkins show some color run, and a few edges show slight wear (see last photo for examples). Easily forgiven — these are absolutely marvelous.
