He loves me, he loves me not — these cherubs have the answer.
In France the game is effeuiller la marguerite, plucking a daisy petal by petal. Here the cherubs start with the question, Dois-je l'effeuiller (shall I pluck it), and the answers are embroidered on their banners: Il m'aime (he loves me), Un peu (a little), Beaucoup (a lot), Passionnément (passionately) and Pas du tout (not at all). Antique hand embroidered linen with decorative openwork hems. Unbelievably charming.
Condition is very good, gently used, probably 100 years old. Hand laundered, clean and bright, with a couple of small smudges on the napkins and faint discoloration on one napkin. Some embroidery is missing on the tablecloth motifs and on a few of the napkin motifs. Easily forgiven on this enchanting set. It looks lovely.
