Vintage Rapisardi linen hand towel featuring the Contrada della Chiocciola flag bearer from the Siena Palio, hand embroidered in Italy.
A proud Chiocciola alfieri (flag bearer) stands in full festival costume with his banner. The embroidery is beautifully worked and richly textured, the design inspired by the pageantry of Siena’s historic contrade and their centuries-old Palio horse race. Rapisardi often turned to Italian regional traditions in her work—the Palio designs are among the most striking examples.
Very good condition, gently used. Hand laundered, clean and bright. We note some fold lines and areas of storage darkening, and a few storage spots. All minor, and easily forgiven on this rare piece. It looks wonderful.
15 x 22 inches.
